Abstract
Introduction
Literature, especially poetry, has long been a site of cultural and ideological negotiation in Iran. Mehdi Akhavan-Sales, as one of the pivotal figures in modern Persian poetry, uses symbolic and mythological language to critically reflect on Iran’s cultural identity and societal turmoil.
The Eighth Reading is a text layered with historical, mythological, and social references, providing fertile ground for a semiotic analysis. The aim of this study is to explore the cultural signs within the poem through the lens of Yuri Lotman's cultural semiotics and to understand how these signs engage with broader issues of national identity and cultural memory. In particular, the analysis focuses on how the symbolic elements in the poem—such as the coffeehouse, the storyteller, and mythological figures like Rostam and Shaghad—can be interpreted as cultural signs within Lotman’s framework.

This study assumes that the cultural signs within The Eighth Reading can be effectively explained through Lotman’s semiotic theory, particularly by applying the concepts of "center and periphery" and "interaction within the semiotic space." It also proposes that the binary oppositions in the poem—such as hero and traitor, or heat and cold—mirror the identity crises of contemporary Iranian society. Furthermore, it is hypothesized that Lotman’s theory offers a nuanced understanding of how these signs mediate between tradition and modernity, reflecting the deep cultural contradictions and tensions within Iran’s evolving national consciousness.
Materials & Methods
This study employs a descriptive-analytical methodology grounded in Yuri Lotman’s theory of cultural semiotics. Data were collected from the poem The Eighth Reading, theoretical texts by and about Yuri Lotman, and historical-cultural resources relevant to the themes of the poem.
Key concepts used in the analysis include "the semiotic space," "center vs. periphery," and "textual interaction within cultural systems." These tools allow for the interpretation of how symbolic elements in the poem function as reflections and critiques of Iranian society and identity.

Discussion & Result
Analysis reveals that The Eighth Reading is a rich and multilayered semiotic system in which cultural signs interact to reflect the deep-rooted socio-political tensions of modern Iran. The poem’s intricate use of mythological references—such as the legendary figures of Rostam and Shaghad—the symbolic space of the coffeehouse, and the recurring motif of the storyteller function not only as narrative devices but also as powerful mediators of cultural memory and identity discourse.
The coffeehouse, as a culturally significant site, symbolizes a traditional communal gathering place that stands in stark contrast to the fragmentation and alienation characteristic of contemporary Iranian society. The storyteller, meanwhile, embodies the preservation and transmission of collective cultural narratives across generations. Rostam and Shaghad exemplify the hero/traitor dichotomy, highlighting the psychological and moral ambivalence embedded within the national consciousness.
Lotman’s "center and periphery" concept becomes especially evident in how hegemonic cultural norms are subverted by peripheral narratives—those of betrayal, marginalization, and existential disillusionment. These semiotic interactions collectively reveal a society caught in the tension between mythologized pasts and unstable modern realities.
Thus, Akhavan-Sales’ poem not only narrates an identity crisis but actively enacts it, placing enduring cultural symbols into a dynamic and transformative dialogue with historical change.
Conclusion
The Eighth Reading stands as both a literary achievement and a cultural document. Through the framework of Yuri Lotman’s cultural semiotics, the poem reveals deep layers of meaning in its treatment of myth, identity, and society.

This analysis shows that Akhavan-Sales employs cultural signs to engage with Iran’s historical consciousness, thereby turning poetry into a vehicle for both cultural critique and continuity. The findings demonstrate how semiotic processes in literature can unveil the mechanisms by which cultural identity is constructed, contested, and re-imagined.
Future research may expand upon this framework by applying cultural semiotics to other works of contemporary Persian literature, further exploring the dynamic between tradition, modernity, and national narrative.
