English

Introduction:
This study examines the feminization of aging in Iran, a growing socio-economic challenge in the 21st century. Elderly women face unique challenges stemming from structural inequalities, gender discrimination, and limited access to resources, exacerbated by increased life expectancy and demographic shifts, leading to a greater proportion of elderly women in the population (60% of Iran’s elderly). The research critically analyzes these challenges and the inadequacies of existing policies, aiming to propose solutions to improve the quality of life for elderly women and bridge policy gaps that leave them vulnerable to economic, social, and healthcare disparities.
Materials & Methods
A qualitative research approach was employed, combining content analysis and thematic analysis to evaluate Iran’s social policies on aging. The study utilized a conceptual framework focusing on gender identity, socio-economic barriers, mental and social well-being, and technological innovations. Data were collected from key policy documents, including the Iranian Constitution, development plans, and the Elderly National Document, and manually coded to identify recurring themes and patterns related to elderly women’s specific needs. Analysis involved systematic steps: identifying relevant keywords, grouping them into broader themes, and interpreting findings within the theoretical framework.
Discussion & Result
The findings reveal significant shortcomings in Iran’s social policies, which adopt a generalized approach and fail to address elderly women’s specific needs. These include the absence of comprehensive legal frameworks, limited access to healthcare services, and neglect of gender-sensitive measures. Elderly women, especially in rural areas, face acute poverty due to inadequate pensions, gender pay gaps, and limited employment opportunities. Social isolation, exacerbated by cultural norms and inadequate community support, and insufficient healthcare services further compromise their physical and mental well-being.
Conclusion:
The study underscores the need for comprehensive, inclusive, and gender-sensitive policies to address the multi-dimensional challenges faced by elderly women in Iran. Recommendations include enhancing social participation, investing in rural healthcare and infrastructure, expanding pension schemes, and providing psychological support services. Drawing on successful international models like Japan’s participatory aging programs and Sweden’s integrated healthcare systems, fostering intersectoral collaboration and involving elderly women in policy design are critical to improving their quality of life and promoting social cohesion and sustainable development in Iran.
