Introduction
This article examines the participation of the middle class (both traditional and modern) in the Iranian Islamic Revolution of 1979, using a social approach to political participation and historical methodology. It addresses the question of why the middle class played the most significant role in the regime change, offering three answers based on the Civic Voluntarism Model: 1. Motivation: Members of the middle class possessed a strong impetus for participation. 2. Resources: They had the resources (time, financial capital, and civic skills) that facilitated participation compared to other classes. 3. Encouragement/Coercion through Group Membership: Membership in political and social groups played a crucial role in encouraging and mobilizing middle-class participation.
The article argues that these three factors were facilitated by the socioeconomic status of the middle class, including their level of education, income, and occupational prestige. The study aims to explain why the middle class, more than other social groups, actively participated in the revolution.
Materials & Methods
The article employs a historical methodology and a social approach to political participation to analyze the role of the middle class in the Iranian Revolution. It uses the Civic Voluntarism Model as its theoretical framework, which combines elements of resource mobilization, psychological theories, and social capital. The model focuses on four key elements: 1. Resources: Time, money, and civic skills. 2. Psychological Motivation: Interest in politics and belief in the efficacy of political action. 3. Social Networks: Membership in groups and networks that encourage political participation. 4. Issue-Specific Interests: Personal concerns or moral values that drive political action.
The study relies on historical data and secondary sources to analyze the participation of the middle class in the revolution, focusing on their socioeconomic status and the role of social networks in mobilizing them.
Discussion & Results
The article concludes that the middle class’s participation in the Iranian Revolution was driven by three main factors: 1. Motivation: The middle class had a strong desire to change the political regime due to dissatisfaction with the Shah’s government. 2. Resources: They possessed the necessary resources (time, money, and civic skills) to participate effectively in political activities. 3. Social Networks: Membership in political and social groups played a significant role in mobilizing the middle class for participation.
The study highlights that the middle class’s socioeconomic status, including their education, income, and occupational prestige, provided them with the resources and networks needed for political mobilization.
Conclusion
The article provides a sociological explanation for the middle class’s significant role in the Iranian Islamic Revolution. It argues that the middle class’s participation was driven by a combination of motivation, resources, and social networks, all of which were facilitated by their socioeconomic status. The study contributes to the understanding of political participation in revolutionary movements by applying the Civic Voluntarism Model to the Iranian context. It suggests that future research could explore the role of other social groups in the revolution and compare the Iranian case with other revolutionary movements.
