Predicting Suicidal Ideation Based on Loneliness with the Mediating Role of Depression: A Case Study of Students at the University of Guilan

Abstract
The main objective of this article is to predict suicidal thoughts based on the loneliness component with the mediating role of depression. This objective focuses on the student population of the University of Guilan in the second half of 1401. In this regard, the main research question is whether the loneliness and depression components can predict suicidal thoughts in students of the University of Guilan during the second half of 1401? The main hypothesis is that the answer to this question is positive, which was confirmed in the research process. The research method is a survey with an emphasis on the standard questionnaires Beck Depression Inventory, Beck Suicidality Scale Questionnaire, and Russell Loneliness Scale. A sample size of 350 people was selected based on the Cochran sampling formula and was examined based on random sampling. In order to test the research questions, Pearson correlation method and stepwise multivariate regression were used. The relationship between depression and suicide is positive and significant at the P<0.01 level. According to the direction of the correlation coefficient, there is a positive and significant relationship between depression and loneliness.
