This article analyzes Akhavan’ poem The Eighth Decade through a semiotic approach grounded in Lotman’s cultural theories. The primary aim of this study is to examine concepts such as "center and periphery" and "the role of texts in cultural transmission" to shed light on the poem’s cultural, historical, and identity-related dimensions. The research seeks to identify cultural signs within the poem and explore their impact on representing Iran's national and social identity while reflecting its historical context. The central question is how Lotman’s theories can be utilized to analyze the cultural signs in The Eighth Decade and what meanings can be extracted from this analysis. To address this, the study employs semiotic methods and text-centered approaches to examine key elements of the poem, such as the themes of coldness, the narrator, and mythological characters. The findings reveal that The Eighth Decade portrays social and cultural conflicts, identity crises, and the complexities of contemporary Iranian society, highlighting its struggle between tradition and modernity. Additionally, the results emphasize the role of the coffeehouse as a space for social and cultural interaction. They demonstrate that the cultural signs embedded in the poem contribute to a deeper and more nuanced understanding of Iranian identity.
