Shariati believes that defining of mysticism, articulated through the triad of "mysticism, equality, freedom," provides a pathway to surmount nihilism and subjectivism. He argues that reliance on Cartesian rationality and Western subjectivist categories inevitably entraps one in subjectivism. Among anti-colonialism, postcolonialism, and decoloniality, he deems the latter a failed endeavor, as it employs Western frameworks—akin to postcolonial and anti-colonial theories—to transcend subjectivism. Shariati further critiques anti-colonialism for reducing Western metaphysics to politics, asserting that expelling colonizers cannot address nihilism, which he considers non-political. Instead, he advocates an ontological approach to confront nihilism effectively.
