Drawing on the insights of the spatial turn, this paper argues that metaverse spaces cannot be regarded as neutral or merely technological configurations. Rather, they function as ideological constructions that reshape users’ spatial perceptions, needs, and practices in alignment with the values and priorities of platform capitalism. From this perspective, metaverse operates as a deliberate spatial intervention that, through the engineered processes of what Lefebvre terms the “production of space” and the establishment of what Foucault describes as “disciplinary spatial regimes,” reconfigures spatial cognition, spatial needs, modes of subjectivity, and the conditions of possible action. While the spatial turn presupposes that space inherently contains the potential for resistance against dominant orders, the central question of this paper is whether metaverse users can generate alternative spatialities and meanings that exceed the preferences embedded within platform discourse. Drawing on critical frameworks developed by spatial-turn theorists, the paper demonstrates that resistance in metaverse largely takes the form of “inoculated resistance”—a pre-managed and systemically contained mode of resistance that ultimately neutralizes its radical potential. Thus, the metaverse, even as it appears to open avenues for resistance, simultaneously activates mechanisms that render such resistance constrained and politically innocuous.
