Objective: This study aimed to explore elementary school teachers’ perceptions and experiences regarding the negative characteristics of school principals during their careers.
Method: The qualitative, phenomenological research included 17 elementary teachers from Kermanshah province, selected through purposeful sampling. Data were collected via semi-structured interviews and analyzed using Colaizzi’s method.
Findings: The negative traits of principals were categorized into three main themes and 49 sub-themes: lack of professional expertise, weak professional commitment, and ethical deficiencies. These themes covered various specific issues teachers encountered in their interactions with principals.
Conclusion: Teachers primarily emphasized weaknesses in principals’ expertise and commitment, highlighting significant shortcomings in these areas. The findings underscore the need to address these issues to enhance school leadership effectiveness and foster a positive educational environment. Principals must develop greater professional competence, strengthen their commitment, and adhere to higher ethical standards to improve school dynamics.
