The relationship between belief and action is a core challenge in lifestyle studies. It has been addressed by two distinct theoretical traditions: philosophical/theological approaches view belief as an internal, teleological source of action, while sociological approaches emphasize how social structures shape and reproduce action. This duality has produced partial explanations, unable to fully account for the persistence or discontinuity of belief in practice.
This study employs an analytical-comparative approach to argue that the core problem is not a weakness within either tradition, but the overlooked tension between their differing explanatory logics: the teleological logic of belief in Islamic thought and the structural logic of action in interpretive sociology. Analyzing Allameh Tabatabai and Allameh Misbah Yazdi alongside Pierre Bourdieu and Anthony Giddens reveals a foundational divergence. However, at the analytical level, both offer critical explanatory insights.
Consequently, the article proposes an integrative analytical framework for a dialectical understanding of the belief-action relationship, enabling a more precise analysis of lifestyle complexities.
