This Research re-examines Reza Davari Ardakani’s interpretation of the “place of philosophy” within the historical experience of Islamic Iran. The study argues that Davari’s project has often been misunderstood through reductionist readings that portray him either as an anti-Western thinker or as a defender of a nostalgic return to the Islamic past. By analyzing his conception of history, civilization, philosophy, and modernity, the article demonstrates that Davari’s central concern is neither opposition to the West nor revivalism, but rather a critique of the condition of imitation that characterizes contemporary non-Western societies. The paper explores his notions of historical consciousness, philosophy as a manifestation of history, and the relationship between true knowledge and conventional knowledge. It further highlights the theoretical significance of Davari’s attempt to formulate a non-Eurocentric understanding of modernity and civilization. The article concludes that Davari’s philosophical project offers a framework for overcoming intellectual dependency through critical reflection and renewed engagement with the foundations of thought, thereby opening possibilities for a post-imitative and post-colonial future.
