Clothing in social movements functions not only as a material and symbolic medium of protest but also as a means of identity representation, meaning production, and resistance to dominant power structures. This study examines the relationship between visual characteristics of clothing—including colors, forms, symbols, and uniforms—and forms of social resistance. It explores how dress contributes to collective identity formation, the representation of social demands, and the construction of alternative meanings across diverse historical and socio-political contexts. Rather than treating clothing as merely an aesthetic choice or visual expression, the study approaches dress as a social and cultural practice through which groups negotiate identity, challenge dominant norms, and create visible forms of resistance. Using a qualitative multiple-case comparative methodology, the research analyzes visual and textual data from selected social movements. The theoretical framework combines Michel Foucault’s perspective on power, the body, normalization, and resistance with Stuart Hall’s theory of representation and cultural meaning-making. Foucault’s approach provides a framework for examining dress within relations of power and resistance, while Hall’s perspective enables analysis of clothing as a cultural text through which meanings are encoded, circulated, decoded, and reinterpreted.
