This article deals with the issue of hope and social hope in the history of sociology, in which the history of sociology is divided into four stages: prehistory, early history, the stage of development and entry into public discourse, and the later stage. In the prehistory of sociology, hope has been discussed in a scattered manner and in connection with the social developments of European societies, and in a normative manner. In the second period, hope has never been a central issue for sociologists, but they have addressed it in some paragraphs throughout their works. Despite the occurrence of major tragedies such as the two world wars and the Vietnam and American wars, hope has not been a central issue for sociologists in the third stage either. However, hope has become an important issue in philosophy at this time, and philosophers such as Bloch and Arendt have addressed it. It is after the philosophical subjectification of hope that several sociologists have addressed it in the later stage. The discussion of hope has flourished greatly in the second part of the fourth stage of sociology, but it has not yet become a central topic for sociologists around the world.
