The expansion of the home video network in the 1390s SH (2010s) paved the way for the emergence of historical-melodramatic series in which history is mostly a backdrop for romantic and family narratives. Drawing on Adorno and Horkheimer’s concept of the “culture industry” and Raymond Williams’s materialist approach as a complementary perspective, the present study examines how the political-historical is represented in the series Shahrzad, Khatoon, Jeyran and I Want to Live, and how this representation relates to the relations of production, distribution and consumption. The research method is directed qualitative content analysis with a multiple-case design, and the data include all episodes of the four series, promotional and paratextual materials, and 200 user comments on Filimo and Namava. The results show that history is not removed from these works; rather, the narrative’s centre of gravity shifts from structural conflicts and collective forces to the emotional relations and individual fates of the characters, and the past is reconfigured in a familiar and consumable form. These findings, however, are limited to the examined sample and do not prove a direct effect of the works on audiences’ historical consciousness.
