Abstract
In recent decades, new social movements have emerged as significant and influential phenomena in social and political spheres. These movements, often driven by diverse goals and motivations, have profoundly impacted the social and cultural structures of societies. This paper, adopting a theoretical approach, explores how subjectivity materializes within these movements and its connection to everyday life. The central question of this study is: How do new social movements, through the manifestation of subjectivity and the redefinition of everyday life, challenge existing social and political structures and foster social change? Subjectivity, defined as the ability of an individual or group to act as an agent and influence their surroundings, plays a pivotal role in new social movements. This research illustrates how these movements, by emphasizing individual and collective identities, aim to infuse new meanings into everyday life and, through collective actions, challenge existing social orders, striving to reconstruct and reproduce a transformed collective life free from domination.
Keywords: New social movements, globalization, subjectivity, everyday life, politics of subjectivity
Introduction:
In recent decades, new social movements have emerged as influential phenomena within social and political arenas. These movements, unlike traditional social movements that focus primarily on economic and class issues, engage with a broad spectrum of topics such as human rights, social justice, environmental concerns, and cultural identities. This paper explores how subjectivity in these movements interacts with the concept of everyday life. By focusing on the question of how new social movements redefine everyday life and subjectivity, this study examines their potential to challenge existing social and political structures.
Materials & methods
This study employs a qualitative, analytical-descriptive approach, relying on theoretical frameworks of new social movements to analyze the interaction between subjectivity, everyday life, and political structures. The research methodology includes an in-depth examination of the ways these movements strive to reconstruct social identities and imbue everyday life with new meanings, aiming to transform the collective social environment.
Discussion & Results
NSMs encourage people to reinterpret their daily lives and sense of self by resisting hegemonic controls. This reconceptualization is reflected in how they redefine everyday practices, aiming to subvert dominant norms that reinforce hierarchical structures. As a result, these movements enable individuals to express their identities and pursue freedom from social and political restraints. By challenging both overt and covert forms of cultural control, NSMs build counter-narratives to existing social frameworks. They confront systemic inequalities and initiate dialogues on issues such as democracy, justice, and autonomy, which traditional political mechanisms often ignore. This opposition is also a critique of the entrenched “meta-narratives” that justify existing power dynamics, pushing instead for a more pluralistic approach to governance and identity. These movements support collective identity by emphasizing group recognition and resisting marginalization. Axel Honneth’s concept of “recognition” highlights how NSMs validate the individual’s role within a collective, affirming shared struggles for equality and freedom. As individuals connect around shared experiences and values, they develop a collective identity that resists political and cultural marginalization, embodying an interconnected, resilient community. NSMs seek to not only address immediate injustices but also transform the underlying cultural structures that maintain societal norms. This transformation includes reshaping collective consciousness and redefining public spaces as sites for expressing grievances and envisioning new social possibilities. These movements aim for holistic change by confronting the cultural frameworks that enforce status quos, ultimately promoting democratic engagement and social inclusivity. In summary, NSMs in today’s context act as catalysts for societal transformation by combining personal empowerment with collective action.
Conclusion
New social movements, by focusing on subjectivity and redefining everyday life, represent a shift in the dynamics of resistance and social change. By emphasizing personal and collective identity formation, these movements advocate for a transformed collective existence, free from hegemonic control. This paper concludes that new social movements, rather than solely opposing the current order, strive to recreate daily life and redefine subjectivity, thereby playing a significant role in reconstructing modern societies. These movements aim for holistic change by confronting the cultural frameworks that enforce status quos, ultimately promoting democratic engagement and social inclusivity. In summary, NSMs in today’s context act as catalysts for societal transformation by combining personal empowerment with collective action. They use digital networks to globalize local concerns, challenge cultural hierarchies, and pave the way for alternative social orders grounded in justice and democracy. This multidimensional approach redefines what is politically and socially possible, fostering a new paradigm of social movement based on inclusion, recognition, and the empowerment of everyday life.
