Abstract
Recognized as a cultural and artistic commodity, the contemporary Iranian carpet has served to converge art and culture with traditional and identity components. The objective of the present study was to investigate how traditional and modern concepts would combine in contemporary carpets based on the cultural-historical approach. By asking the question “What are the cultural and historical components influencing the evolution of Iranian carpets”, the present study applied the qualitative descriptive-analytical method to investigate the data obtained from library documents. According to the findings from sociological studies, identity components such as the Iranian-Islamic culture and tradition appear to have a role to play in how contemporary carpets have evolved, as any developments meaning a change of approach would be made possible within cultural-historical studies. According to the Cultural-Historical approach, a locally-made carpet, inspired by religious and mythic concepts, seeks to represent cultural innovation and dynamism, eventually offering diverse concepts embodied in images. The diversity of designs and motifs of Iranian carpets, derived from traditions of historical eras, in conjunction with the local cultures of various regions, involve abstract and illustrative naturalistic elements, serving as a binding agent in cultural identity.

Introduction
Characterized by aesthetic and sociological components, Iranian carpets have served as a cultural-artistic and practical commodity. The aesthetic components of carpets represent an illustrative approach to conveying the sociological concepts of each era. For this, carpets, as cultural commodities, illustrate an Iranian-Islamic identity via artistic expression. A continuation of cultural concepts of various eras has embodied the cultural-historical approach in Iranian carpets. Thus, research on Iranian carpets requires historical and cultural studies, which serve to link art and culture with traditional and identity components. It is essential to understand the Iranian-Islamic culture and identity through historical and cultural studies within a sociological approach. The study of how cultural history has formed and been represented in Iranian carpets has led to identifying traditional identity-derived tastes because historical situations have resulted in common perceptual circumstances and sensual components in how arts are perceived. In sum, the convergence of contemporary tastes and traditional components would help form common motifs and designs. Contemporary Iranian carpets are characterized by aesthetic and sociological components, as well as cultural roots, requiring historical studies associated with the Iranian-Islamic culture to be dynamically represented. Today, carpets have experienced an evolving history influenced by traditional cultural concepts such as diverse religious and mythic concepts, conveying diverse designs and motifs. These traditional concepts have been derived from historical and cultural identity, representing symbolically diverse images in various regions. These religious and mythic concepts have led to diversly local and national motifs and designs in different carpets of various regions.
As stated above, the goal of the present study was to investigate the convergence of traditional and modern concepts in Iranian carpets using the cultural-historical approach; the main problem of the study was to investigate how traditional and modern components influence the formation and transformation of carpets.
Materials & methods
This study used a qualitative research method and involved a descriptive-analytical procedure to collect data derived from library documents.
By asking the question “What are the cultural and historical components influencing the evolution of Iranian carpets”, the present study investigated contemporary Tabriz carpets, hypothesizing that carpets illustratively represent the historical approach that have founded on past traditions and have evolved by revealing cultural identities.
Discussion & Results
Findings showed that traditional and modern components converged to form the cultural-historical approach of contemporary carpets. It was also found that, according to the sociological studies of contemporary carpets, a definition of the evolution of contemporary Iranian carpets would be incomplete without regard for the traditional approach derived from the Iranian-Islamic culture. According to the findings from sociological studies, identity components such as the Iranian-Islamic culture and traditions appear to have had a role in how contemporary carpets have evolved, as any developments meaning a change of approach would be made possible within cultural-historical studies. According to the Cultural-Historical approach, a locally made carpet, inspired by religious and mythic concepts, seeks to represent culturally innovative dynamism, eventually offering diverse concepts embodied in images. Carpets are thus said to seek a kind of modernity, entrenching their roots in religious and national identities. Diverse Iranian carpet designs and motifs, derived from traditions of historical eras, in keeping with locally woven cultural concepts, involve symbolic abstract and illustrative naturalistic motifs, which serve as interfaces in forming a cultural identity.
Conclusion
In the contemporary age, it was concluded, cultural and artistic studies are represented by modern concepts, reflecting the cultural history within the contemporary (modern) sociological structure that would help evolve the traditional Iranian carpet system, establish the relationship between traditional and contemporary Iranian carpet components, transform the production and consumption systems, and attract users. Because contemporary carpets seek to attract a multitude of users and appear to be interested in a multitude of tastes, the contemporary carpet structure is founded on a mix of culture and tradition, along with a complicated social structure, by taking into account the factors influencing the carpet production system. Hence, in keeping with the evolving function of these factors and the redefinition of the role of designers and users influenced by cultural-historical and modern approaches, contemporary Iranian carpets can be dynamically reproduced. In sum, carpets have gone through a dynamic process, illustrating images of constantly changing traditional developments. On the other hand, evolving diversity in carpets’ cultural-historical tradition has originated from their practical roles, being formed by the collective need and turning into a cultural good for exchanges amid rising cultural, commercial, and economic values over time. Contemporary carpets illustratively reflect past mythic traditions and are characterized by the aesthetic distinctions and commonalities of motif structures derived from various regions across Iran. In sum, developments in contemporary carpets based on contemporary sociological components are associated with common modernist approaches, with carpets blending traditional and modern motifs, diversifying and incorporating traditional elements into contemporary realistic motifs, and illustrating realistic and naturalistic images as in flower and hen motifs.
